To Be Honest Read online

Page 27

Between 2010 and 2015, I received a lot of influential advice about how honest to be, most notably from Aerial East, Kristy Muniz, Nazy Karimi, Nicole Alexander, Ryland Blackinton, Juliana Romano, Charlotte Royer, Assol Abdullinah, Maria Liu, Jonas Sundstrom, Luke Temple, Lauren Heller, Shilpa Ray, Nina Ellis, Dan Estabrook, Justin Cox, Raina Hamner, Adam Green, Jack Dishel, Jeffrey Lewis, Dione Davis, Nicole Atkins, Jimmy Giannopoulos, James Levy, Cottia Thorowgood, Mical Klip, Stephanie Peterson, Jon Wiley, Dima Dubson, Lena Singer, Alan Del Rio Ortiz, and Kaya Wilkins.

As far as those who most directly contributed to this book’s existence: Bianca Giaever appreciated my honesty problems enough to tell Ira Glass. Ira interviewed me, sitting through hours of my ranting. Then Liz Pitofsky sent Elyse Cheney the radio piece Ira had made. She introduced me to my agent, Adam Eaglin, who endured a few years of my ranting. Luckily, the brilliant and moving Caitlin Hodson talked some sense into me about how to be at least a little bit less obnoxious. I also received particularly helpful advice from Annie Correal, Jenna Sauers, Dev Hynes, and John McElwee and inspiring support from Hailey Wierengo and Stephanie Fischer. Then my editor, Jamison Stoltz, who I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to work with, sifted through hundreds of pages of my ranting. Those portrayed in this book (especially Dad and Mom and Eve) were impressively understanding about this whole crazy thing, kinder than I could have ever hoped or imagined. In summary, this book is only here because a lot of wonderful people suffered through a lot of obnoxiousness. Thanks, everybody!
